Manatee elementary school reports first COVID case. Palmetto High sends more people home
A Manatee County elementary school has reported its first COVID-19 infection, while a high school reported its third case, according to the Manatee County School District.
Freedom Elementary said one student had tested positive for the novel coronavirus and that four other people were in quarantine after a “direct exposure” to the student.
At Palmetto High School, a third employee was infected with the novel coronavirus since the start of the school year on Aug. 17. An additional 26 people were exposed and are now in quarantine.
In all, 179 people linked with Palmetto High have been quarantined after they were exposed to someone with COVID-19 — the most of any campus in the district, as of Wednesday afternoon.
In all, 74 students or employees in the district have been found to have COVID-19. Those cases have resulted in 935 exposures and quarantines, according to the school district, since Aug. 17.
When people are exposed to COVID-19, meaning they stayed within six feet of an infected person for more than 15 minutes, the exposed employees and students are forced to quarantine for 14 days.
