Two Manatee County residents among latest 135 Floridians confirmed to have died from COVID

The deaths of two more Manatee County residents are among the latest 135 residents confirmed to have died from COVID-19, according to the latest data from the Florida Department of Health on Thursday.

In Manatee County, the official death toll of residents killed by COVID-19 now stands at 254.

The latest deaths were that of a 62-year-old man and a 83-year-old woman, according to FDOH’s data. One of them was either living or working at a local long-term care facility.

Statewide, the official death toll reached 10,868 on Thursday. The deaths of four non-residents were also announced. A total of 143 non-residents have died in the state from COVID-19.

The health department also announced 3,269 new infections across the state of the novel coronavirus, which causes the fatal respiratory illness COVID-19. The state has seen a total of 611,991 cases.

Thirty-two of the new infections were in Manatee County. Local cases since the onset of the pandemic now total 10,310.

The latest cases were among 533 test results released with a 6% positivity rate.

Hospitalizations remain lower with 27 patients currently admitted to one of the county’s three general hospitals with COVID-19 as a primary reason for admission.

According to the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration, there were 132 beds including 11 ICU beds, available among the three hospitals.

The AHCA data does not account for how many beds the hospitals are actually staffed for nor does it provide how many total patients with the coronavirus are currently hospitalized. When the hospitals first hit capacity in mid-June, all three hospitals began providing that information and more about available resources to county public safety officials directly.

In recent days, Manatee Memorial Hospital has decided to stop sharing that information.
