Three Manatee County residents among 228 new Florida COVID-19 deaths reported

Three Manatee County residents are among the 228 COVID-19 deaths reported Friday by the Florida Department of Health.

The official death toll in Manatee County now stands at 245.

Statewide, the official death toll is 9,141. The deaths of two non-residents brings the total of non-residents who have died in Florida from the disease to 135.

The three local deaths reported were that of a 72-year-old woman, 81-year-old man and an 86-year-old man. One of three lived or worked at a local long-term care facility, according to FDOH’s data.

Meanwhile, the health department reported 6,148 new positive cases in the state. A total of 563,285 have been infected with the novel coronavirus in Florida since March.

In Manatee County, there were 107 new positive cases confirmed for a total of 9,661 confirmed cases.

Those new cases were among 360 test results released locally on Friday, with an alarming daily positivity rate of 29.7% — the highest daily positivity rate the county has seen in weeks.

Hospitalizations had decreased on Friday with 70 patients admitted at one of the county’s three general hospitals who are positive for the coronavirus. Eighteen of those patients were having to be treated in an ICU.

According to the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration, 67 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 as a primary reason for their admission.

While the overall census of the hospitals remained nearly the same, capacity had increased on Friday with 50 staffed beds available, including 14 ICU beds.

Surrounding counties

  • Sarasota County cases increased from 6,479 to 6,605. The death toll increased from 167 to 174.
  • DeSoto County cases increased from 1,393 to 1,398. The death toll rose from 18 to 19.
  • Hardee County cases increased from 998 to 1,006. The death toll remained at eight.
  • Hillsborough County cases increased from 33,428 to 33,697. The death toll rose from 427 to 457.
  • Pinellas County cases increased from 18,329 to 18,469. The death toll rose from 536 to 541.
