Seven more Manatee residents die from COVID. Florida sets new daily record of 276 deaths

The death of seven more Manatee County residents from COVID-19 have been confirmed by the Florida Department of Health. Statewide, 276 new deaths were reported Tuesday, the highest daily count since the start of the pandemic.

The state’s official death toll of people who have died because of COVID-19 is 9,395. The death of another non-resident was also reported on Tuesday, making a total of 132 non-residents who have died in the state from the disease.

In Manatee County, the official death toll now stands at 234. Thirty-five of those deaths were reported Monday, setting a daily record for Manatee.

The health department also confirmed 55 new coronavirus infections in Manatee County on Tuesday. In total, 9,396 people have tested positive locally.

Across the state there were 5,831 new cases announced. The total number of infections in Florida is now 542,792.

The latest local confirmed deaths included a 79-year-old man, a 33-year-old man, a 55-year-old man, a 74-year-old woman, am 81-year-old woman, an 84-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man.

Two of the Manatee County residents either lived or worked at a long-term care facility, according to health department data.

As deaths have spiked, hospitalizations for COVID-19 have declined at the county’s three general hospitals.

On Tuesday, there were 83 patients hospitalized at either Manatee Memorial Hospital, Blake Medical Center or Lakewood Ranch Medical Center who were positive for the coronavirus, according to data the hospitals provide county officials daily. According to the Florida Agency for Healthcare Adminstration, there were 80 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 as a primary reason for admission.

While hospitalizations for COVID-19 have decreased , the availability of staffed beds has also decreased since Monday at the three hospitals. On Tuesday, there were 29 total available staffed beds, including 10 ICU beds, among the three hospitals.

Infections are on the rise at the Manatee County jail with seven inmates who were in custody who are positive for the coronavirus as of Tuesday afternoon. To date, a total of 20 inmates have tested positive. Six employees at the jail who have tested positive are also currently out.

  • Sarasota County cases increased from 6,256 to 6,314. The death toll increased from 147 to 162.

  • DeSoto County cases increases from 1,358 to 1,377. The death toll increased from 16 to 18.

  • Hardee County cases increased from 976 to 986. The death toll remained at seven.

  • Hillsborough County cases increased from 32,731 to 32,996. The death toll rose from 388 to 395.

  • Pinellas County cases increased from 17,941 to 18,103. The death toll rose from 500 to 513.
