Manatee County reports 74 new cases as Florida confirms 180 more COVID-19 deaths

Manatee County had 74 new positive cases and 180 more COVID-19 deaths were reported across the state, according to data released Friday by the Florida Department of Health.

The state’s official death now stands at 7,927.

In Manatee County, there were no deaths confirmed on Friday. Since the pandemic started in March, there have been 189 residents who have died from COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

With the latest new cases reported, local infections now tally 9,124.

Statewide, there were 7,686 new positive cases reported. The state has now had a total of 518,075 who have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Overall positvity in the state since the start of the pandemic was at 13.3% on Friday, while in Manatee County it remained steady at 10.9%. The latest 63 test results reported locally had a psoitivty rate of 11.5%.

Hospitalizations

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 continue to slowly decline in Manatee County’s three general hospitals. On Friday, there were 89 patients hospitalized in one of the county’s three general hospitals, according to data the hospitals provide county officials daily. Of those 16, a slight increase, required intensive care.

Capacity at the hospitals meanwhile has continued to improve. After all three hospitals being at or near capacity for month, availability has continued to increase daily all week.

There were 59 available beds, including 12 ICU beds, among the three hospitals, according to the data provided to county officials.

According to the Florida Agency for Healthcare administration, there were 79 inpatients among the three hospitals.

The breakdown among hospitals of COVID-19 cases and available beds was:

  • Manatee Memorial Hospital: 43 COVID-19 positive patients, 5 of whom are in ICU, nine available non-ICU beds and two available ICU beds.
  • Lakewood Ranch Medical Center: 10 COVID-19 positive patients, one of whom are in ICU, 11 available non-ICU beds and four available ICU beds.
  • Blake Medical Center: 36 COVID-19 positive patients, 10 of whom are in ICU and 27 available non-ICU beds and six available ICU beds.

Surrounding counties

  • Sarasota County cases increased from 6,025 to 6,095. The death toll remained 130.
  • DeSoto County cases increased from 1,321 to 1,327 . The death toll remained 16.
  • Hardee County cases increased from 890 to 908. The death toll remained at seven.
  • Hillsborough County cases increased from 31,563 to 31,865. The death toll rose from 378 to 386.

  • Pinellas County cases increased from 17,358 to 17,541. The death toll rose from 469 to 481.
