Two Manatee County residents among newest 77 COVID-19 deaths in Florida, state says

Two Manatee County residents were among the 77 newest COVID-19 deaths confirmed by the Florida Department of Health on Monday.

A total of 156 residents have now died from COVID-19 in Manatee County. Statewide, the official death toll stands at 5,931. Another 118 non-Florida residents have died from the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Another 123 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Manatee, the health department said Monday. A total of at least 7,982 Manatee residents have been infected by the coronavirus since the pandemic got underway.

Across the state, there were 8,892 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday. That is the lowest daily tally of newly confirmed cases in Florida since it reported 7,347 confirmed cases on July 7.

The state now has a total of 432,747 cases.

Local deaths confirmed in July have been individuals between the ages of 42 and 88. Those between the ages of 25 and 34 continue to account for the age group with the highest number of positive cases.

Manatee County’s three general hospitals continue to feel the effects of the surge of new cases. As of Monday, there were 142 patients total admitted at the hospitals who are positive for the coronavirus — about 21 percent of all current patients, according to data released by the hospitals directly to county officials daily.

Of those hospitalized with COVID-19, there are 32 patients being treated in intensive care units.

According to the data released by the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration, there are 127 patients admitted whose primary diagnosis is COVID-19.

Blake Medical Center was at capacity with no available staffed beds on Monday. The remaining two hospitals had a total of 21 available staffed beds, including six ICU beds.

The breakdown among hospitals of COVID-19 cases and available beds was:

  • Manatee Memorial Hospital: 62 COVID-19 positive patients, nine of whom are in ICU, nine available non-ICU beds and three available ICU beds.
  • Lakewood Ranch Medical Center: 22 COVID-19 positive patients, seven of whom are in ICU, six available non-ICU beds and three available ICU beds.
  • Blake Medical Center: 58 COVID-19 positive patients, 16 of whom are in ICU.

The latest 123 cases in Manatee County were among 694 test results released on Monday, for a 17.7% positivity rate.

The overall positivity rate has continued to increase for more than a month, with that rate now 10.7% overall locally and 12.6% statewide.

Surrounding counties:

  • Sarasota County cases increased from 5,103 to 5,168. The death toll rose from 113 to 115.
  • DeSoto County cases increased from 1,172 to 1,205. The death toll remains at 14.
  • Hardee County cases increased from 781 to 789. The death toll remains five.
  • Hillsborough County cases increased from 27,077 to 27,483. The death toll rose from 295 to 298.
  • Pinellas County cases increased from 15,147 to 15,339. The death toll rose from 373 to 378.
