Five more Manatee County residents die from COVID-19, state says

Five Manatee County residents are among the latest 134 deaths from COVID-19 confirmed by the Florida Department of Health on Tuesday.

In Manatee County, a total of 149 residents have now died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, according to the health department. Statewide, the official toll now stands at 5,206. The deaths of two more non-residents was also announced, raising the tally of those deaths to 113.

Manatee County had 133 new positive coronavirus cases on Tuesday morning, out of 9,440 new cases reported in the state by the health department.

A total of 6,871 cases have been confirmed in Manatee County since the pandemic got underway. Across Florida, a total of 369,834 cases have been confirmed.

The county’s new cases were among 976 new test results released. The positivity rate for those tests was 13.6%.

The overall positive rate of tests has continued to climb as cases surge. The positivity rates are now 10.2% in Manatee County and 11.9% statewide.

Patient counts continue to climb at Manatee County’s three general hospitals, with 134 coronavirus positive patients receiving care as of Tuesday.

The availability of staffed beds continues to be a problem, with Manatee Memorial Hospital and Blake Medical Center once again at capacity on Tuesday. A total of 14 beds, including one ICU bed, were available at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, according to data provided by the hospitals to county officials.

All three hospitals have suspended elective surgeries and other procedures that require a hospital stay.

The breakdown among hospitals with COVID-19 cases:

  • Manatee Memorial Hospital had 68 COVID-19 patients..
  • Lakewood Ranch Medical Cente had 26 COVID-19 patients.
  • Blake Medical Center had 40 COVID-19 positive patients.

The Florida Department of Hospital has reported a total of 414 hospitalizations in Manatee County for COVID-19 during the pandemic. The Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration listed 116 current hospitalizations in the county, as of Tuesday afternoon, where COVID-19 was the primary diagnosis for the patient.

Surrounding counties:

  • Sarasota County cases increased from 4,338 to 4,432. The death toll rose from 107 to 108.
  • Desoto County cases increased from 1,086 to 1,099. The death toll rose from 13 to 14.
  • Hardee County cases increased from 710 to 717. The death toll remained at four.
  • Hillsborough County cases increased from 24,135 to 24,550. The death toll rose from 243 to 244.
  • Pinellas County cases increased from 13,705 to 13,925. The death toll rose from 323 to 334.
