Two more Publix workers test positive for COVD-19. Not all grocers release test results

As more Manatee County residents test positive for COVID-19, two more Publix associates in the Bradenton area have tested positive for the disease, the Lakeland-based supermarket chain confirmed this week.

“We can confirm that we have an associate who works at store No. 1152, 11245 North US 301, Parrish, and store No. 828, 2875 University Parkway, Sarasota, that have tested positive for COVID-19,” a spokesperson said in an email.

Another Publix associate, at the Lockwood Commons supermarket, 4240 53rd Ave. E., tested positive for COVID-19, a company spokeswoman confirmed last Thursday.

Due to patient confidentiality, there is little information on the cases, and associates are worried, one Publix employee told the Herald.

“The testing and reporting of cases by health departments varies widely state-by-state. As a result, we cannot fully and accurately report cases in real time, but we have been, and will continue to be, keenly focused on intensive, ongoing protective measures in all our stores. Those efforts are conducted with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, local and state health departments,” the Publix spokesperson wrote.

Responses to questions about COVID-19 cases vary greatly by company.

A spokesperson for Walmart declined to say whether there have been positive COVID-19 diagnosis in any of its seven Manatee County stores.

“While we have had positive cases in some of our stores around the country, we’re leaving individual confirmations up to your local health department out of respect and privacy for our associates’ personal health. Also, the health department is the local authority on if and when such information should be reported for the safety of the community. However, rest assured we have taken all measures necessary to ensure the well-being of those inside our stores,” the Walmart spokesperson wrote.

“In the case we do have a confirmed case at any of our stores, we are working with those associates and offering guidance and time needed to receive medical care. We have processes in place to inform associates. Associates have been encouraged to prioritize their health and stay home if feeling sick. We also implemented a COVID-19 emergency leave policy for all associates who feel unable or uncomfortable coming to work. Recently, additional benefits were extended to our associates during this time to support their medical, emotional and financial needs,” the Walmart spokesperson said.

Aldi and Winn Dixie did not immediately respond to a query whether any of their Manatee County stores have experienced a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

The Herald also asked the Manatee County Health Department about COVID-19 cases at local supermarkets.

“The Department of Health tracks every positive COVID-19 cases regardless of an individual’s employment,” Christopher Tittel, the health department’s communications director, said in an email.
