The FDA warns about more ‘toxic’ hand sanitizers as production meets COVID-19 demand

Five more hand sanitizers from four manufacturers made the FDA’s methanol warning list two weeks after the agency warned about nine sanitizers made by Eskbiochem.

Hand sanitizers commonly declare ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol as an active ingredient. Methanol, also known as wood alcohol, the FDA says, “can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be life-threatening when ingested.

Methanol is not an acceptable active ingredient for hand sanitizers and must not be used due to its toxic effects.”
