Florida sets record with 10,109 new COVID-19 cases. Third-worst day reported in Manatee

Manatee County had 160 new cases of people testing positive for the coronavirus, as the state again shattered the daily record by adding 10,109 new cases, according to the latest data released on Thursday by the Florida Department of Health.

Thursday marked the third-highest daily count reported in Manatee County since the start of the pandemic. The highest counts to date were on June 27 with 267 cases and on June 26 with 166 cases.

There have now been 3,175 people in Manatee County who have been infected by the coronavirus. Statewide, there have now been 169,106 people who have been infected.

The previous daily high in Florida was 9,585 reported on June 27.

The new daily record of 10,109 who have tested positive represented 19.5% of test results released on Thursday across the state. In Manatee County, the daily percent positive rate was 17.6%.

Both rates are higher than the 10% target rate and indicate that the virus is spreading in the community.

One more person has also died in Manatee County from COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The death toll now stands at 130.

That death was among the 67 deaths of Floridians announced Thursday. The death of another non-resident was also reported.

In Manatee County, long-term care residents and staffers account for 87 of the deaths and 484 of the cases.

The median age of new cases in the county continues to remain in the 30’s since early in June. The median age of all those who have been infected since the onset of the pandemic is 40.

The age group with the largest number of cases in Manatee County are those between the ages of 25 and 34. The three age groups that have the highest case counts — those who are between the ages of 15 and 44 make up nearly half of all the cases in Manatee County.

Within an hour of the latest data being released by FDOH, the state pushed out a message from Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees asking Floridians “to protect the vulnerable by avoiding the Three Cs: Closed Spaces, Crowded Places and Close-Contact Settings and by wearing a mask in public.”

“People over the age of 65 and those with underlying conditions are at risk of severe complications from COVID-19 and should avoid crowds and minimize contact outside of the home,” DeSantis said in the provided statement.

Those 65 years old and over account for about 17 percent of the cases in Manatee County and 15 percent of the cases statewide.
