95 more cases of COVID-19 and another death in Manatee. Florida adds over 8,500 cases

Another 95 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Manatee County, according to the Florida Department of Health. They were among 8,530 cases reported statewide on Sunday amid a continuing spike in coronavirus infections.

An additional COVID-19-related death was also reported in Manatee County. The local death toll since the outbreak began now stands at 130 residents, or 4.7 percent of currently reported cases.

Of those deaths, 88 were among residents and staff at long-term care facilities. Previously, about half of Manatee County’s total COVID-19 cases were found at long-term care facilities. But the 475 reported infections at those facilities now account for just 17 percent of all local cases.

The rate at which people are testing positive for the virus in Manatee County, which stood near 5 percent at the beginning of the month, increased to 7 percent this weekend. The statewide test positivity rate went up by more than a percentage point over the last week and now stands at 7.5 percent.

Those testing positive for the virus statewide and locally are now skewing younger. Over the past two weeks, the median ages of people testing positive for the virus in Manatee County were 29 to 38 years of age, according to the state health department. However, people over the age of 65 continue to represent the majority of fatal cases in Florida.

Another 29 deaths were reported statewide on Sunday, raising the death toll among residents to 3,419.

The state health department’s case total since testing for the virus began is now at 141,075.

Manatee County cases from Saturday to Sunday:

  • Cases increased from 2,642 to 2,737.
  • The death toll increased by one to 130.
  • The number of residents hospitalized since the outbreak increased by three to 258.

  • The number of males infected is 1,304, compared to 1,412 females.

  • The number of people tested increased to 39,121.

  • Manatee County’s positivity rate remained at 7% Sunday, compared to 6.5% on Friday, 6.1% a week ago and 5.1% three weeks ago.
  • 475 cases (17% of all cases) were among residents and staff of long-term care facilities in Manatee. (Another two deaths tied to care facilities were reported over the past week, bringing the total to 88.)

  • Five cases have now been reported at Manatee County correctional facilities.

Sarasota cases from Saturday to Sunday:

  • Cases increased from 1,341 to 1,401.
  • Sarasota County’s positivity rate remained at 4 percent.
  • The death toll remained at 96.

Florida cases from Saturday to Sunday:

  • Cases increased from 132,545 to 141,075.
  • The death toll increased from 3,390 to 3,419.
  • The statewide positivity rate is 7.5%.

Surrounding counties:

  • Desoto County cases increased from 574 to 585. The death toll remained at 10.
  • Hardee County cases increased from 403 to 411. The death toll remained at three.
  • Hillsborough County cases increased from 9,130 to 9,918. The death toll remained at 132.
  • Pinellas County cases increased from 5,713 to 6,020. The death toll increased from 149 to 154.
  • Polk County cases increased from 3,182 to 3,495. The death increased from 92 to 93.
