COVID-19 death toll hits 100 in Manatee County with two more deaths reported

Another two people are reported to have died from COVID-19 in Manatee County, according to data released from the Florida Department of Health on Thursday.

Deaths from the disease caused by the coronavirus now total 100 in Manatee County. Statewide, deaths now total 2,607.

New cases in Manatee County also continue to spike, with 24 new cases reported. A total of 1,134 people have now tested positive for the virus.

Across Florida, new cases jumped, with more than 1,400 new cases reported. The state’s tally now stands at 60,183.

Thursday’s tally of new cases is the largest count of cases in one day reported since the Florida Department of Health first began releasing data on people testing positive for the new coronavirus in March. The spike comes one day after Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the state was ready to move to into the second phase of the state’s three-part reopening beginning Friday.

Meanwhile, social distancing is not occurring and the recommended use of masks is not being worn by any local law enforcement and some protesters at the ongoing local protests against racism and police brutality since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.

In Manatee County, skilled nursing homes and assisted living facilities continue to be ravaged by COVID-19, with two thirds of the county’s deaths residents or workers at local facilities.

Brookdale Palma Sola, 450 67th St. W., Bradenton; Lily’s Promise - Bradenton, 830 Rosemary Circle, Bradenton; and National Church Residences of Bradenton, 3229 19th St. W., Bradenton, are the latest long-term care centers in the area to have current cases, according to the state health department.

The state recently began releasing data for antibody testing. In Manatee County. Of the 2,035 people who have been tested for the presence of the coronavirus antibodies, 76 have tested positive.

In Sarasota County, the total of cases has now reached to 652, with 82 people dying from the disease.

In Hillsborough County, the total of cases now stands at 2,479, with the death toll at 85. Pinellas County has 1,397 total cases, with 91 people dying from the disease.
