Bradenton police officer tests positive for coronavirus after initially testing negative

A Bradenton police officer first tested negative when his wife tested positive. But after caring for her for days and developing symptoms himself, he tested positive for the virus last week.

The officer last worked on April 21, the day before his wife tested positive, according to Capt. Brian Thiers. He and his children were immediately tested, but he tested negative.

He remained at home to for his wife and eventually developed symptoms. He was tested for a second time at the National Guard supported testing site near the Mall at the University Town Center.

Early last week, the officer tested positive for the virus, according to Thiers.

As of Friday, there were 946 total confirmed cases of people testing positive in Manatee County, according to data released by the Florida Department of Health. A total of 90 people in the county have died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

The officer has been tested again and will have to test negative twice before he is allowed to report back to work.
