Second inmate at Manatee County jail tests positive for the coronavirus

A second inmate at the Manatee County jail has tested positive for the coronavirus.

On Monday, a 58-year-old man was arrested on charges of failing to report being a sexual offender and contempt of court. While being booked into the Manatee County jail told deputies and staff that he had been in close contact with a family member who is positive for COVID-19, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Randy Warren.

“He wasn’t showing symptoms of the virus, but was isolated, tested and placed in a negative pressure cell in the jail’s medical unit,” Warren told the Bradenton Herald.

The jail received the man’s positive results on Tuesday. The man is currently the only inmate in custody with the virus.

He remains in custody. He is being held on bonds totaling $14,000.

Late last month, the jail had it’s first inmate test positive for the coronavirus. A 60-year-old man arrested on violation of probation charges was released on his own recognizance on May 1, two days after his arrest.

The names of the inmates have not been released because of medical privacy reasons.
