18 more COVID-19 cases in Manatee County. Statewide death toll nears 2,000
Eighteen Manatee County residents are among the nearly 900 new cases of people testing positive for the coronavirus in the state, the Florida Department of Health said Monday.
There are now 867 cases in Manatee County, as the statewide total hit 46,442.
Statewide, there were 24 new deaths in Brevard, Broward, Miami-Dade, Hillsborough, Lee, Pinellas, Polk and Walton counties caused by COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, the health department said. The state’s official death toll now stands at 1,997, while Manatee County’s death toll remains at 81.
With the latest test results released, 8.1% of the 10,686 people in Manatee County tested have been found to be infected with the novel coronavirus. Statewide, 6.9% of those tested have been positive.
Neighboring Sarasota (5.8%), Hillsborough (4.3%) and Pinellas (4%) all have positive percentages lower than Manatee County and the state.
In Sarasota County, there are now 518 total cases, with 58 of those people dying from COVID-19.
Hillsborough County now has 1,653 total cases while Pinellas County has 1,051 total cases. In Pinellas County, where 68 people have diedand 55 people have died in Hillsborough.
Hillsborough County’s mortality rate is lower than the state’s, with 3% cases ending in death compared to 4% statewide. Manatee’s mortality rate remains more than twice the state’s rate with 9% of cases ending in death. In Pinellas County, nearly twice as many people die from the disease compared to the state average, with a mortality rate of 7%.
Sarasota County has the highest mortality rate locally at 12%.
Residents and staffers at long-term care facilities continue to test positive for the virus, with many dying from the disease.
Last week, the additional deaths of one staffer at Braden River Rehabiliation Center, two residents at Riviera Palms Rehabilitation Center, two residents at Casa Mora Rehabilitation And Extended Care, one resident at Manatee Springs Rehabilitation And Nursing Center and one resident at Bradenton Health Care were announced by FDOH.
With 19 confirmed deaths to date, Braden River Rehabilitation Center has the fourth highest death toll among the 3,806 skilled nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the state.
