In-person Catholic Masses to resume next week in Southwest Florida, bishop says
Catholic Masses will be allowed to resume in-person next Monday in parishes throughout the Diocese of Venice, Bishop Frank J. Dewane announced in a press release on Tuesday.
All non-liturgical activities will remain suspended, and the diocese outlined additional safety measures to be followed at local parishes to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Diocesan pastors have been asked to limit the size of congregations to 25 percent occupancy and maintain social distancing guidelines indoors. Additionally, those who attend Mass will be asked to wear face masks, bring hand sanitizer and receive communion in the hand rather than by mouth.
Priests and ministers may also choose not to participate publicly because of age or health conditions, according to the Diocese of Venice. And some Mass schedules may have to be adjusted.
“The Faithful of the Diocese have been very patient and understanding during this pandemic,” Dewane said in a press release. “There is great anticipation for a return to normalcy, however we must take measured steps with resuming Masses with a congregation and additional kindness is encouraged for Parish Priests, staff and volunteers.”
The obligation to attend Sunday Mass has been suspended through June 28, and live streaming of worship ceremonies will continue.
The Diocese of Venice oversees 71 parishes throughout Southwest Florida in Manatee, Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Lee and Sarasota counties, according to the organization’s website.
In-person Mass services have been suspended throughout the diocese since March 20.
