Two more Manatee County residents die of COVID-19 as Florida cases top 40,000

Two more deaths due to COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus — were reported in Manatee County overnight — bringing the death toll to 74, according to the Florida Department of Health’s Saturday morning update.

There were 14 new cases reported since Friday, bringing the total number of cases in Manatee County to 756. All of the new cases reported from Friday to Saturday are women, which now make up 60% of those infected in the county.

Despite reporting only two new cases in Sarasota County, three more people have died, bringing the death toll in Sarasota to 57.

Across the state of Florida, 46 new deaths were reported since Friday. The death toll from COVID-19 in the state is now 1,715 as the number of cases increased to 40,001 as of Saturday morning.

Manatee County numbers from Friday to Saturday

  • The number of positive cases increased from 742 to 756.
  • The death toll increased from 72 to 74.
  • The number of hospitalizations increased from 175 to 177.
  • The number of men infected is 304 compared to 448 women.
  • The number of residents tested increased from 7,061 to 7,407.
  • The county’s percentage of positive cases from the number of residents tested has decreased from almost 15% one week ago to 10.2%.

Sarasota County numbers from Friday to Saturday

  • The number of positive cases increased from 416 to 418.
  • The death toll increased from 54 to 57.
  • Hospitalizations increased from 135 to 136.
  • The number of men infected is 170, compared to 232 women.
  • The number of residents tested increased from 6,107 to 6,458.
  • Sarasota County’s percentage of positive cases from the number tested is 7.5%.

Florida COVID-19 numbers from Friday to Saturday

  • The state’s number of positive cases increased from 39,199 to 40,001.
  • The state’s death toll increased from 1,669 to 1,715.
  • The state’s percentage of positive cases from the number tested is 7.5%.

Other surrounding counties

  • Pinellas County cases increased from 828 to 848. The death toll remains at 59.
  • Hillsborough County cases increased from 1,371 to 1,400. The death toll remains at 37.
  • Polk County cases increased from 601 to 623. The death toll increased by two bringing fatalities to 33.
  • Hardee County cases increased from 33 to 36. There have been no reported deaths in Hardee County.
  • Desoto County cases increased from 42 to 47. The death toll is five.
