Manatee County has 25 new cases of COVID-19. State total tops 32,000 cases

Manatee County has 25 new cases of COVID-19 as the state added more than 600 new cases, according to the Florida Department of Health.

There are now 533 people in Manatee County who have tested positive for the new coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19. Statewide, the total cases has topped 32,000.

The statewide death toll rose to 1,088 with the latest 14 new deaths in Broward, Miami-Dade, Duval, Hernando, Leon, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas and Volusia counties announced on Monday. Manatee County’s death toll remains at 42.

The local toll includes 18 deaths that have occurred in long-term care facilities, but the heaslth department has stopped providing the total number of residents and staff linked to such facilities by county. Manatee County’s cases are linked to six skilled nursing homes and three assisted living facilities.

The latest local facility to have confirmed cases of the virus is the Cottages of Bradenton, 5700 24th Street East, an 85-bed licensed assisted living facility.

In Manatee County, less than 1% of the population has been tested. The county’s goal is to test at least 1% of the county’s population, Director of Public Safety Jacob Saur announced last week. But with only 3,514 residents tested, about 600 additional people would need to be tested to reach that goal.

Meanwhile Manatee County’s positive rate remains among the highest in the state, with 15.2 percent of those tested being positive for the coronavirus. Only three counties have a higher positive rate: Suwannee, Jefferson and Gadsden counties.

Overall, 9% of those tested statewide have been positive for the coronavirus.

In Sarasota County, 307 people have tested positive for the coronavirus, 32 of whom have died. According to the health department, 14 of Sarasota County’s deaths have been linked to long-term care facilities.

In Hillsborough County, 1,015 people have tested positive for the coronavirus and 21 of them have died. There are 657 people in Pinellas County who have tested positive for the coronavirus, 25 of whom have died.
