Three new coronavirus cases reported in Sarasota as Florida’s total tops 1,000

The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in Florida continues to climb as tests are administered by the Florida Department of Health and private labs.

Among the newest cases reported Sunday were three people in Sarasota.

The number of total cases in Florida rose to 830 on Sunday morning, and one additional death was reported. On Sunday evening, the number of total cases increased to 1,007.

FDOH has now confirmed 13 deaths in Florida as a result of the disease, including one in Manatee County.

In Manatee County, the number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus remains at 13. The local cases were found in residents from ages 56 to age 81. Seven of the infected people required hospital care, according to the state.

In all, 113 people have now been tested for the disease in Manatee County. Results were pending for seven tests as of Sunday evening.

In Sarasota County, 17 cases have been confirmed in people from ages 50 to 87. In all, 356 tests have been administered there, more than three times the number of people tested in Manatee County. There are 52 Sarasota County tests pending results. No deaths have been reported in Sarasota County, but six people have required hospitalization.

Five patients who tested positive for COVID-19 remain in treatment at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, according to spokeswoman Kim Savage. The hospital continues to send patient samples for testing. No new cases had been confirmed as of Sunday afternoon.

Elsewhere in the Tampa Bay area, there are 58 cases reported in Hillsborough County and 38 reported in Pinellas County. No deaths have been reported in either county. Hospitilzation was required for six people in Hillsborough and seven people in Pinellas, according to FDOH.

Statewide, the most COVID-19 cases have been reported in Miami-Dade County with 227, followed by Broward County at 217.
