East Manatee Winn-Dixie demolished, redevelopment begins
The old started making way for the new this week as a demolition crew took down a 62,000-square-foot former Winn-Dixie grocery store at Lockwood Ridge Road and State Road 70.
Property owner Gryboski Howe & Gravley of Decatur, Ga., has proposed to build 161,000 square feet of retail space in eight buildings on the 26-acre property, according to a site plan filed with Manatee County.
In February, plans were for the construction of a 6,119-square-foot Wawa gas station on a 2-acre corner of the property. The activity restarts redevelopment of the site, which was once the planned location of the proposed West Lakes Plaza Community Shopping Center, which was never built.
