Cache to close The Mall at University Town Center store and all locations, files for bankruptcy

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Women's apparel retailer Cache will shut its doors at The Mall at University Town Center for the last time at the end of April.

Cache is the first store to close in UTC since the shopping center's grand opening in October of last year.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the first week of February and will close all nationwide locations, including 21 in Florida. A list of open stores offering 40 to 70 percent discounts is available on Cache's website.

Retail solutions firm Great American Group bought the chain and is assisting with inventory management and liquidation sales.

The UTC store's general manager, Darcie Jacob, helped open a Cache store at the Southgate Mall in Sarasota in 1997. When the UTC location became available, Jacob said the company asked her to be the general manager of the new store. She's been with the company 18 years and said she's still looking for opportunities to continue in retail.

"It's a very, very sad day," Jacob said. "I love retail; I've done it forever."

UTC general manager Octavio Ortiz said while the mall's management team is actively marketing the space, there are currently no interested parties.
