Anna Maria Island Creamery and Bakery won’t even be open for business for a few more days at least, But store manager Shea Kahlil and her staff were frantically busy on Tuesday.
“We’ve been making gelato since yesterday, getting ready for tonight,” Kahlil said. “We’re giving free gelato for the kids and $5.95 all-you-can-eat for the adults.
The shop, at 9801 Gulf Drive, Suite 1-4, in Anna Maria, should have about 20 flavors of gelato, plus a couple of kinds of soft-serve ice cream, on hand for this evening’s”Kids Eat Free” event, from 5-8 p.m.
Kahlil said the shop should be open for business “hopefully within the next week or so,” and will host a grand opening closer to the holidays. From then on, it will offer gelato, hand-made popsicles, pastries, coffee and tea drinks, truffles and fresh-squeezed orange juice, among other items.

But for tonight, it’s pretty much just gelato, an Italian ice cream with richer flavor, a smoother texture and less fat and sugar than the ice cream most Americans are familiar with.
