The Folk School at Florida Maritime Museum will hold a demonstration in how to make kombucha, led by returning Folk School teacher, Jillian Ross, the Ferment Lady, from 6-8 p.m. May 31.

Kombucha, a traditional fermented tea beverage that has been around for centuries, is loaded with gut-loving probiotics, enzymes, vitamins and essential acids for the body. It’s one of the hottest trends in health beverages and those who regularly drink it claim it aids in everything from digestion, sleep, weight loss, detoxification and even hangovers, according to WebMd.

In the class, Ross will cover all of the basic methods to help students get started brewing at home. The class is for all levels of experience. A starter scoby (kombucha culture) will be provided, according to a press release.

The class fee is $35 and you can register online at FloridaFolkSchool.org. The class will be held at the Florida Maritime Museum at 4415 119th St. W., Cortez.

Upcoming food-related classes include Basic Fermentation on June 3, Canning 101 on June 10 and Advanced Fermentation Class on June 17.
