Outstanding volunteer group awards
n Adopt-A-Highway Program: George F. Young Inc. adopted 1.5 miles of U.S. Business 41 from Green Bridge heading south and has done cleanups since 1993.
n Adopt-A-Road Program: Southeast Residents Association has adopted 1.25 miles of Ninth Street East and Pride Community Park since 1993. This year they added trees along Ninth Street East for National Arbor Day.
n Adopt-A-Shore Program: HandsOn Manatee – The ManaTEEN Club has been cleaning one-half mile of gulf shoreline at Coquina Public Beach since 1997. In addition, the club volunteered in 2009 and 2010 in the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program doing cigarette litter scans.
n Storm drain stenciling: The Boys & Girls Club of Manatee County De Soto Unit marked 244 storm drains with the message “Dump No Waste – Protect Your Water” on roads in Kingston Groves, Oakwood Village, Holiday Heights, Cortez Gardens, and on Cortez Road.
