ST. PETERSBURG -- For the first time in school history, two members of the Out-of-Door Academy boys swim team have earned individual district championships after winning titles in Saturday's Class 1A-District 8 swimming and diving competition hosted by St. Petersburg Shorecrest Prep.
Martin Baffico won the title in the 100 butterfly in a school record time, and Zach Szmania was first in the 100 breaststroke competition.
As a team, the Thunder boys finished second at the meet. The 200 medley relay team of Sarsen Whatmore, Szmania, Baffico and Laszlo Tengerdy won first place and established a new school record. Tengerdy was sixth in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle events. Whatmore competed in the 200 freestyle (fourth) and 500 freestyle (second). Charles Hayes was fifth in the 100 breaststroke event.
The girl's team finished third in district competition. Leading the way was Imola Csendes in the 200 individual medley (fifth place) and the 100 butterfly (second place). Kate Patrice competed in the 50 freestyle (third) and 100 freestyle (sixth). Seventh-grader Reece Whatmore helped out the Thunder with two strong finishes in the 200 freestyle (fourth) and 500 freestyle (fourth).
A number of swimmers will advance to region competition next weekend at the Selby Aquatic Center in Sarasota.
