Prep roundup | Cardinal Mooney rallies past Braden River in boys hoops
Braden River took a 28-27 lead into halftime in Friday's boys basketball tilt at Cardinal Mooney, but came unglued after the intermission and suffered a 67-52 loss to the Cougars.
Emmanuel Lambright led Mooney (4-7) with 20 points while Nick Peacock finished with 14, Mateo Whelton scored 11 and Richard Krupa added 10.
The Pirates (5-5) next play Dec. 28 at Bradenton Christian in the Smoothie Kign Classic.
Braden River was led by Deoni Cason's 13 points, while Jordan Curtis added 10 points and Brandon Dunbar collected eight points and 10 rebounds.
SOUTHEAST 79, DUNEDIN 52 -- Ronald Taylor led a balanced attack with 12 points as the Noles picked up a district win.
Cedric Brooks (10 points), Amin Marshall (nine points), Keives Brooks (nine points) and Joshua Joseph (four blocked shots) also played well for Southeast (8-4, 5-1), which next plays starting Dec. 28 at the Smoothie King Classic tournament.
BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 92, ST. STEPHEN'S 51 -- Ryan Leunk scored a game-high 25 points, Vincent Rehfeldt added 23 points with 10 assists and grabbed eight boards, Justin Aracena added 13 rebounds with four points and Jake Lister chipped in 10 points for the Panthers.
Bradenton Christian (10-2) next plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lakewood Ranch.
Saint Stephen's (2-7) was led by Nick Rundey with 11 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Jordan Edwards had 10 points and two assists, while Travis Tobey, an eighth grader, finished with nine points on 75-percent shooting.
The Falcons next play at the Keswick Christmas Tournament starting Dec. 28 against Calvary Christian.
Girls basketball
BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 53, SAINT STEPHEN'S 21 -- Amy Van Ryn had 15 points and two steals to lead the host Panthers past their county rivals.
Kali Gelston added 14 points for BCS (7-2), which next plays in the Smoothie King Classic on Monday. Dec. 28.
The Falcons were paced by Lanae Jones with eight points.
SOUTHEAST 89, DUNEDIN 26 -- Faith Mays led the way for the Seminoles in a rout on the road against the Dolphins.
Mays tallied 18 points while collecting five steals and five boards for Southeast (10-3). Bree Thomas and Marline Valcin each finished with nine rebounds and eight points, while Yonna Reed notched 11 points for the Noles.
Sophie Giardina chipped in nine points for Southeast, which sees action next at the 12th-annual Willie Clemons Holiday Classic.
The Noles will take the court at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 against Lake Gibson.
Boys Soccer
LAKEWOOD RANCH 0, VENICE 0 -- Mustangs keeper Liam Bramley collected seven saves on the way to his fourth straight shutout and seventh of the season, but Ranch couldn't break through on offense and settled for a draw in a matchup between two district-leading teams.
The Mustangs (10-2-2) are now off for the holidays and will return to action Jan. 6 at Cape Coral Mariner.
Girls soccer
LAKEWOOD RANCH 1, SARASOTA RIVERVIEW 0 -- Faith Schyck scored an unassisted goal in the fifth minute Friday and the Mustangs held on for the final 85 minutes to earn a district win.
Goalkeeper Danielle Wilson gave Ranch (11-1, 6-1 Class 5A-District 8) its ninth shutout of the season with four saves as center backs Nicole Wurster and Julia Ortiz kept the Rams (6-9-1, 3-5) at bay.
Lakewood Ranch is now finished for the calendar year and will return to the field Jan. 5 at Sarasota Military.
MANATEE 8, SARASOTA 0 -- Meredith Roberts led the way with two goals and an assist as the Canes romped at home on senior night.
Brianna Blethn and Jessica Schafer each had a goal and two assists, while single goals were scored by Clarissa Palmer, Amelia Greaves, Maia Krebser and Ayla Johnston. Sydney Cornell dished two assists and Kyle Ameres had one assist.
Manatee (11-1-1, 5-1) next plays Jan. 4 at Lemon Bay.
Wrestling
RANCH WINS THREE -- Lakewood Ranch stayed on a roll Friday, winning all three of its matches on the first of two days in the 24-team Southside Duals at Boca Ciega High School.
The Mustangs defeated Seminole 65-12, defeated Fort Pierce Central 52-18 and beat Dixie Hollins 39-33. Going unbeaten in those three matches for Ranch were Jake Seaman (106 pounds), Hunter Reed (120), Dylan Cameron (132), Timmy Dwyer (138), Luis Tremblay-Videl (170), Logan Bounds (182) and Nate Lancaster (220).
Lakewood Ranch, now 8-2 on the season, will wrestle Northside Christian and Clearwater Central Catholic in Saturday's early action, then if it wins, will advance into the winners' pool for the chance to wrestle for the event title.
Girls weightlifting
CANES WIN COUNTY TITLE -- Manatee claimed the girls Manatee County weightlifting championship, edging Bayshore by 27 points for first place at Manatee High School. The Hurricanes finished with 87 points to the Bruins' 60.
