Prep roundup: Three Manatee wrestlers place at Knockout Christmas Classic
Three Manatee wrestlers scored top-six finishes Wednesday after two grueling days of wrestling against elite competition at the 32-team Knockout Christmas Classic, hosted by Kissimmee Osceola High School.
Brandon Dossey, a freshman wrestling at 170 pounds, captured fifth place by winning four of his six total matches. Marshall Craig (113 pounds) also went 4-2 and finished fifth, while Matt McAleer (4-3) finished sixth at 160 pounds.
Manatee (8-4) is idle until Jan. 8, when it hosts the Hurricane Team Challenge.
Girls basketball
LAKEWOOD RANCH 75, FORT PIERCE CENTRAL 47 -- Aleah Robinson led the way with 20 points as the Mustangs took fifth place at the Queen of Palms Tourney in Fort Myers.
Kyra Klarkowski and Kailyn Scully each added 13 points for Ranch (14-4).
Boys basketball
ST. THOMAS AQUINAS 53, LAKEWOOD RANCH 52 -- The vastly undersized Mustangs committed a turnover with nine seconds remaining, costing them a chance at a huge win over private school power Aquinas at the Kingdom of the Sun tournament in Ocala.
Damien Gordon (12 points, four rebounds, four steals), Jack Kelly (five points, 11 rebounds), and Evan Spiller (eight points) played well for Ranch, while Brock Sisson added eight points.
Ranch (11-4) finished 1-2 at the event and hosts Braden River on Tuesday.
CARDINAL MOONEY 72, FORT MYERS 69 -- Nick Peacock (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Emmmanuel Lambright (17 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks) each had double-doubles to lead the Cougars in the Suncoast Holiday Classic at Sarasota Riverview.
Mattel Whelton poured in 18 points, while Jordan McNeal scored eight for Cardinal Mooney (6-8), which is off until Jan. 7, when it hosts Sarasota Military Academy.
