Prep sports roundup | Lakewood Ranch Mustang wrestlers cruise to championship in Plant City
Hunter Reed and Timmy Dwyer led the way with individual titles as Lakewood Ranch emerged from a 21-team field as the overall champion of the Cougar Invitational, a two-day wrestling event at Plant City Durant High School.
Reed won five straight matches to capture the 120-pound weight class, while Dwyer did the same at 138 pounds.
Ranch also had two runners-up, Dylan Cameron (132 pounds) and Chase Sharp (220), and three wrestlers finish third, Nate Lancaster (220), Luis Tremblay-Vidal (170) and Jake Seaman (106).
Other medalists for the Mustangs were Logan Bounds (fourth, 170), Tyler Gilbert (fifth, 152), and Elijah Miller (sixth, 113)
Lakewood Ranch (5-2) next wrestles in the Southside Duals at Boca Ciega High School next Friday and Saturday.
DANNY BYRON DUALS -- Four Manatee wrestlers went unbeaten through two days of action in the Danny Byron Duals, held Friday and Saturday at Kissimmee Osceoloa High School.
Marshall Craig (113 pounds), Caleb Rudisill (138), Connor Morang (170) and Brandon Dossey (182) each enjoyed a perfect weekend for the Canes (7-4), who next wrestle Thursday at New Port Richey Mitchell.
Girls basketball
BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 39, SARASOTA CHRISTIAN 35 -- Jessica Jackson led the way with nine points and seven rebounds as the Panthers picked up a district win.
Hannah Leahy and Bailey Sikkema each had six points, with Sikkema adding eight rebounds for BCS (6-2, 2-1), which hosts Saint Stephen's on Friday.
WINTER PARK 55, SOUTHEAST 32 -- The Noles fell short in a shootout event held at The Villages High School.
Marline Valcin scored nine points, grabbed 11 rebounds and earned a spot all-tourney team, while Tay Green finished with nine points, six steals and six rebounds for Southeast (9-3), which hosts North Port at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday
Boys basketball
BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 87, SARASOTA CHRISTIAN 42 -- Vincent Rehfeldt scored a game-high 20 points and dished out seven assists to lead the Panthers.
Jake Lister (16 points), Justin Aracena (11 points) and J.T. Noellert (11 points) also weighed in for BCS (8-2, 4-0), which hosts Lakeland Christian at 6 p.m. Monday.
LEHIGH 70, LAKEWOOD RANCH 61 -- The Mustangs came up short in a road loss to a Lehigh team ranked fifth in Class 6A by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches.
Brock Sisson led Ranch with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, while Sam Hester (10 points), Devin Twenty (five points, seven rebounds, five steals) and Jack Kelley (nine points, five rebounds) also contributed.
The Mustangs (6-1) host Palmetto on Tuesday.
