Prep round-up | Lakewood Ranch boys soccer keeps rolling against Sarasota
Lakewood Ranch ran its unbeaten streak to eight games Thursday with a 4-1 win against Sarasota at home. The Mustangs (8-2-1, 3-0-1), who haven't lost since Nov. 9, got two goals from midfielder Connor Bizet, and one each from Pablo Vargas and Tyler Puhalovich.
Ranch visits Manatee on Monday.
PALMETTO 2, NORTH PORT 1 -- After jumping ahead 2-1 in the first half on an own goal and a tally by Candido Caldio, the Tigers played a scoreless second half to upend previously unbeaten North Port (4-1-1, 5-1-2).
Danny Sanchez stopped 10 shots for PHS (6-4-1, 4-2-1) to back a stout defensive effort from Ryan Hirst, Abel Dubon, Frankie Arroyo and Billy Pineda. Caldio's goal, was assisted by Andy Santana, and the own goal was created by Oscar Ramon's corner kick.
Palmetto hosts Manatee on Tuesday.
Girls basketball
LAKEWOOD RANCH 78, BRADEN RIVER 22 -- Playing its third game in three days, the Mustangs had plenty of time to breathe during a 78-22 road win. Guard Kailyn Scully and center LaDazhia Williams each scored 16 for Ranch (10-2, 3-0).
The Mustangs held Braden River (2-7, 0-3) in check with a relentless defense. Junior Aleah Robinson led the Mustangs with six steals to go along with 13 points. India Searls added 10 points and six rebounds.
Lakewood Ranch travels to Venice on Tuesday for another district game. The Pirates host Sarasota Military on Monday.
SOUTHEAST 61, VENICE 36 -- The Seminoles regrouped from a loss a night earlier and cruised against the visiting Indians. Marline Valcin recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while holding Venice's starting center to two points, Shauntavia Green scored 15 and Faith Mays added 14 to help the Noles (9-2) top the Indians (6-4).
Southeast heads to The Villages on Saturday for the Lady Buffalo Challenge where it will play Winter Park.
Girls soccer
BRADEN RIVER 2, VENICE 1 -- Megan Wagner ended the draw in the second half with a goal to give the visiting Pirates a 2-1 win. The defender also assisted defensive midfielder Joanne Gigliotti on BRHS' first goal.
Sophomore Kennedy McNab found Wagner with a pass for the assist on Braden River's second goal. Goalkeper Amber Dion made eight saves for the Pirates.
Braden River (5-4-1, 3-2) split the season series with the Indians (7-4-3, 5-2) and host North Port on Tuesday.
