Girls basketball: Purington leads Manatee High past Saint Stephen's

Canes top Falcons in girls basketball

Bri Purington led the way with 13 points as visiting Manatee scored a 49-35 victory over Saint Stephen's on Friday in girls basketball action.

Lenae Jones led the Falcons with a game-high 26 points.

The Canes (2-1) next play Tuesday at Sarasota, while the Falcons (1-2) visit St. Pete Catholic the same night.

Boys soccer

LAKEWOOD RANCH 7, SARASOTA 0 -- Pablo Vargas recorded a hat trick as the Mustangs (3-2, 1-0) won their district opener in convincing fashion.

Other Ranch goals were scored by Tyler Puhalovich, Ricky Yanez, Drew Butler and Travis Freeman, while keeper Liam Bramley notched his third shutout of the season.

SAINT STEPHEN'S 6, OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 0 -- Jon Boyd led the way with two goals and two assists for the visiting Falcons in their season opener, while Antonio Colacci and Williem Vacek each added a goal and an assist.

Noah LaBelle and Ben Whors also scored for Saint Stephen's (1-0, 1-0), which next plays Monday at home against Sarasota Christian.

Girls soccer

MANATEE 2, RIVERDALE 0 -- Jessica Schafer and Brianna Blethen each scored a goal, while Clarissa Palmer had an assist, as the host Canes improved to 3-0-1.

Keeper Ashleigh Parker had a pair of saves in the shutout for Manatee, which faces Tallahassee Chiles on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Venice.
