Stephens gets double-double to lead Palmetto girls basketball team in season opener

Tigers roll to victory in season opener

Tina Stephens scored 23 points, hauled in 14 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead the Palmetto girls basketball team to a 58-39 victory over Riverview in the Tigers season opener. Taylor Rozier had 14 points, Assia Washington added nine and Dejae Peay contributed eight points.

BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 43 CARROLWOOD DAY 29--Megan Dozeman scored 12 points to lead BCS to a season-opening victory. For the Panthers Amy VanRyn and Annalyse Wiers contribute six points each.

OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 32, DESOTO 24--Sereena Feeney scored 18 points, grabbed five rebounds and was credited with three steals to lead the Thunder to their second victory in two games.

SARASOTA CHRISTIAN 53 SAINT STEPHENS 36--Savannah Sandstrum scored 11 points and Lenae Jones added 10 for the Falcons

Girls soccer

BRADEN RIVER 3, SARASOTA MILITARY 0 -- Camie Lizardi netted a pair of goals to spark the visiting Pirates. Savanah DeCastro added a goal and an assist and keeper Amber Dion turned away four saves for Braden River (3-1-1).

LAKEWOOD RANCH 4 SARASOTA 0-- Madison Karstec scored two goals and Caitlyn Klein added a goal and an assist for the Mustangs. Julia Ortiz, Makenzie Fisher and Sydney Wicks each had an assist.

MANATEE 5, RIVERVIEW 3 -- Meredith Roberts scored four goals to spark the Hurricanes to the victory in their district opener. Manatee (2-0-1) also got a goal from Brianna Blethen. Sydney Cornell had two assists and Jessica Schafer added one assist.

OUT-OF-DOOR-ACADEMY 7, BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 0 -- Abby LaGasse had two goals and added an assist and Natalie Gorji had two goals. Goalie Chloe Spingler recorded her third shutout.

Girls soccer

CHARLOTTE 5, PALMETTO 0 -- Emilie Booth and Caitlyn Lowery netted two goals apiece for the host Tarpons (3-3) in a shutout rout over the Tigers (1-3).

Boys soccer

LAKEWOOD RANCH 4, BRADEN RIVER 0 -- Ricky Yanez and Pablo Vasquez scored two goals apiece and Liam Bramley had six saves to record his second shutout of the season.

PALMETTO 7, PUNTA GORDA CHARLOTTE 1 -- Tynon Dolan scored two goals to lead the Tigers (2-2). Gilberto Caballero got things going by scoring the first goal. Defender Aranth "Billy" Pineda also had a goal.

OUT-OF-DOOR-ACADEMY 6, BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 1 -- Filip Svoboda recorded a hat trick, Augustin Gualtieri scored two goals and added an assist and Cody Cheney had two assists.

Boys basketball

BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 75, BRANDON 70 -- Ryan Leunk had 13 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out eight assists in a preseason tournament game at Lakewood Ranch. Justin Aracema had 11 points and 10 rebounds, JT Noellert had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

LAKEWOOD RANCH 70, PINELLAS PARK 17 -- Sam Hester score 11 points to lead the Mustangs to a lopsided victory in the Lakewood Ranch preseason game. Justin Muscara had eight rebounds and four points for the winners.
