VENICE -- Shortly after Gabrielle Tomeo turned in her scorecard to produce the best score in Tuesday's Class 3A-District 14 girls golf tournament, the Manatee sophomore wasn't reveling in the 1-under par 71 inside the clubhouse at Capri Isles Golf Club.

Instead, she scattered golf balls around the practice putting green, dug in some tees at different intervals for various distances and went back to work on her putting stroke.

"You can always do better," Tomeo said.

On Tuesday, though, there was nobody better than Tomeo, who ripped off four birdies to offset a double bogey and bogey.

The two miscues came on Nos. 15 and 16, and it left a nasty taste in her mouth as she was heading to a sub-70 round until the late blips.

"I was satisfied until 15," Tomeo said. "I was so mad. It was really bad, and that's probably why I bogeyed the next hole."

Tomeo's round meant qualification as an individual for next week's Region 5 tournament at Mission Valley in Nokomis.

Despite her round, which included a 4-under par front nine and total until the 15th hole, Manatee did not earn one of the three regional berths awarded to the top teams.

The Hurricanes finished with a 439 to take fourth place.

Lakewood Ranch fired a 331 to claim its first girls golf district title since 2004. Venice, which entered as the winner of four straight districts, finished runner-up with a 342, and Sarasota (405) took the final qualifying berth.

"We're a little bit higher (Tuesday) than where I thought we might be," Mustangs head coach David Lamm said. "I'm not saying that because I am disappointed in anybody. I just thought we might be five, six, seven shots better."

Katie Kroos-Roberts led Lakewood Ranch with a 73, and finished tied with Venice's Victoria Cangero.

Sophia Warren (83), Theresa Morrissey (87), Natalie Robson (88) and Maya Isom (95) also competed for the Mustangs.

While Tomeo secured one of the three individual berths that were awarded to players not on an advancing team, Manatee's Danielle Wolfe fired a 93 to snag the last one.

North Port's Meadow Southworth carded an 87 for one of the individual berths.

Braden River (476 total) and Palmetto (500) took fifth and sixth, respectively, in the eight-team field.

ELSEWHERE -- The Class 2A-District 19 tournament at Port Charlotte Golf Club featured both boys and girls divisions.

Neither Bayshore or Southeast advanced from either division.

On the boys side, Southeast's Matt Everhart posted an 87 to qualify for the regional as an individual.

The Region 7 tournament is scheduled for next Tuesday back at Port Charlotte Golf Club.

The Bruins and Seminoles did not field full teams in the boys tournament to produce a team score.

The tourney hosts, Port Charlotte, won with a 319, while Englewood Lemon Bay (334) and Sarasota Military Academy (343) took the other qualifying team berths.

Lemon Bay won the girls tourney with a 428, while Hardee (457) and Port Charlotte (473) had the other two qualifying team berths.

Bayshore finished with a 541, with Theo Schultz pacing the Bruins with a 116. Schultz had one of the individual qualifying scores.
