Miami Northwestern entered Saturday night’s game against IMG Academy with one of the best defenses in the state. The Bulls had allowed just 14 points over their first three games on the strength of five seniors who have already earned Power 5 offers.
Those accolades didn’t amount to much against the Ascenders, who beat Northwestern 21-0 at home. The win was their second in a row against an elite program from Miami, joining a victory against Miami Central the week before, and extended their overall winning streak to 32 games.
The Ascenders (4-0), ranked No. 2 nationally by USA Today, took control of the game early.
After a penalty-filled opening drive by Northwestern (3-1), IMG gained possession on Northwestern’s 43-yard line and soon scored on a 12-yard touchdown run by junior Trey Sanders.
Ascenders wide receiver Brian Hightower added a 24-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead, and quarterback Zack Annexstad rushed for a 1-yard score to extend his team’s lead to 21-0 with8:51 left in the third quarter.
The Ascenders play at Trinity Catholic next Friday at 7 p.m., a team they beat 47-23 in 2013 in the only game between the two programs. Trinity Catholic snapped a three-game losing streak to open the season with a 21-0 win Friday against a winless Bushnell South Sumter.
