Nate's Honor Animal Rescue in Bradenton to adopt animals from a puppy mill seizure
MANATEE -- After more than 100 dogs were seized from a Florida puppy mill last month, Nate's Honor Animal Rescue has some of the dogs available for adoption at the Manatee County rescue.
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been transporting the animals to several animal shelters across the state for adoption. The seizure at the Clewiston puppy mill "resulted from an investigation that began after local authorities received complaints about conditions at the breeding facility," according to a news release.
Nate's Honor Animal Rescue received eight dogs on Sunday and five dogs Tuesday. Karen Slomba, associate director of Nate's Honor Animal Rescue, said three have already been adopted.
The dogs are a mix of small and large breed dogs including Siberian Huskies, chihuahuas and poodles. Nate's Honor Animal Rescue received a variety of breeds including chihuahua maltese, poodles, chihuahuas and a miniature pinscher.
"When they called for assistance, we try to help at any opportunity we have," Slomba said. "These are actually very highly adoptable dogs."
The dogs are available for adoption at Nate's Honor Animal Rescue, 4951 Lorraine Road, Bradenton, which is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday this week.
Both owners of the facility, where the dogs were living in filthy conditions, were arrested on cruelty-related charges, according to the release.
"We've seen these dogs come a long way over the last month," said Jessica Rushin, senior partnerships manager with ASPCA Field Investigations and Response. "Now we're bringing them to communities across Florida and hoping local citizens will come out and adopt them. These dogs have never known what it means to be a pet, so we're thrilled that many of them may be spending this holiday season in a warm, safe home for the first time."
In addition to Nate's Honor Animal Rescue, the animals will be available for adoption at:
Humane Society of Broward County
Humane Society of Naples
Humane Society of Pinellas
Humane Society of Tampa
Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County
Helping Hands Pet Rescue in Gainesville
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach
SPCA Tampa Bay
Kelly Krause, ASPCA spokeswoman, said more than half of the dogs have already been placed with shelters and they will be transporting more dogs throughout this week and next.
"We wanted to keep it local as much as possible," she said. "We are trying to place dogs with Florida response partners."
