Hostess recalls a snack cake for mold. One consumer said she bought it at Walmart

Consumer complaints caused Hostess to recall 11 batches of Rasberry Zingers because they might develop mold by their late August best-by dates, according to an FDA-posted recall notice.

This puts the lie to the urban legend that Hostess products have too many preservatives to grow mold before the sun goes nova.

That recall notice, without any product pictures, posted to the FDA’s website late Tuesday. Consumers, one of which said she bought her Raspberry Zingers at Walmart, provided product pictures on Twitter over the last week. The Zinger is basically a raspberry-flavored Twinkie covered with coconut.

Though the recall hadn’t been posted to Hostess’ website or social media accounts Wednesday morning, Hostess’ Twitter account had to answer at least three complaints about moldy Rasberry Zingers, including one mother’s profane displeasure on June 15.

Consumers can return the Raspberry Zingers to the store of purchase for a full refund. Those with questions can call Hostess, 800-483-7253, Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Eastern time.
