Hungry, Bradenton? These restaurants offer takeout and delivery during COVID-19 crisis

Social distancing is hungry work.

And while restaurants across the state have been forced to close dining rooms to curb the spread of the coronavirus, many kitchens are still open and cooking with enhanced safety procedures in place to provide Floridians with food in this time of crisis.

Is takeout food safe?

You may be wondering if it is safe to get takeout and delivery during the coronavirus pandemic. So far, health experts and food officials say it is.

“Currently there is no evidence of food or food packaging being associated with transmission of COVID-19,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in a FAQ post on its website.

In a recent info session, Ian Williams, chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Outbreak Response and Prevention Branch, also addressed concerns about takeout food, according to CNN Health.

“This really is respiratory, person-to-person. At this point there is no evidence really pointing us towards food [or] food service as ways that are driving the epidemic,” Williams said.

North Carolina State University, which is home to food safety researchers and education programs, has also released information regarding COVID-19 and potential food contamination.

A fact sheet from the university calls takeout and drive-thru options “a good risk management choice” that reduces the number of touch points a person encounters and maintains social distancing.

The university also said that the risk of virus transfer from food and food packaging is low, even if the items have been directly exposed to the virus.

And what would happen if you were to eat food that had actually been contaminated with the virus? According to the university, probably nothing.

“Even if your stomach acid did not inactivate the virus, there is no evidence that the virus causing COVID-19 can start infecting through the gastrointestinal tract,” the tip sheet reads.

The university does recommend handwashing or using hand sanitizer after touching food packaging to minimize risk — and that restaurants prevent symptomatic employees from working.

If you still don’t feel comfortable getting food to-go, there’s another option for supporting the food industry. Contact your favorite local restaurant and ask about buying a gift card for later use. Some restaurants even offer the ability to buy them online.
