Jersey Girl Subs bring a bit of ‘fuggedaboutit’ sandwich taste to the Bradenton area
Growing up, Renee Heatley had a favorite sub shop in in Clifton, NJ, that was a local institution. The subs were consistently so good that they attracted generation after generation of hungry fans.
It’s that memory of thinly sliced or shaved ingredients piled high on a bun that Heatley is seeking to replicate with Jersey Girl Subs, which opened Saturday at 7832 Cortez Road W., Bradenton.
While the business motto is “home of the beach bundle,” Heatley and Kim Gomez have been primarily making subs to go in their first week of business. Beach weather has been a little chilly, they say.
The beach bundle includes a cooler, ice, four one-foot-long subs, four sodas, and four bags of chips. It’s ideal for the beach, boating, or fishing, they say.
“We get your lunch together for you,” Heatley said.
Using all Boar’s Head products, and buns from St. Armand’s Bakery, business has been good. Heatley has already restocked her provisions three-times.
All sales are to-go, and cash-only. There is an ATM in one corner for customers who are a little light in the wallet.
Subs are available in 6-inch and foot-long versions. A six-inch ham-and-cheese sub sells for $5.90, a foot-long for $10.30. Among other choices are roast beef and cheese ($7.25 and $12.95), pastrami and cheese ($6.95 and $11.90), corned beef and cheese $6.95 and $11.90), turkey, bacon and cheese ($6.45 and $11.90), and more.
The menu also includes American and Italian subs. The AMI, which includes ham, salami, turkey, roast beef and cheese, sells for $7.25 (6-inch) and $13.25 (12-inch).
“We don’t weigh the ingredients. We want it to look good, taste great, and for customers to come back,” Gomez said.
Jersey Girl Subs will be adding macaroni and potato salads in the near future.
Planned, but not yet on the menu: a meatball sub.
“This is my dream to do this. I am very proud of it,” Heatley said.
She is partners with John Kovalchic in Jersey Girl Subs and a second business, New York Style Pizzeria, 5408 26th St. W.
Heatley would like to open more sub shops on Anna Maria Island later this year.
Jersey Girl Subs, located in the Coral Way Plaza, is open 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. seven days a week. Starting in April, she would like to expand the hours to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
