Flour possibly contaminated with E. coli recalled nationwide

Smucker Foods of Canada announced a recall Wednesday of four flour brands sold across the United States on the possibility of E. coli contamination.

The E. coli bacteria’s effects can run from bloody diarrhea and dehydration to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure that can lead to death. Young children, the elderly and those with damaged immune systems are most vulnerable to HUS.

The brands affected are:

▪ Maya Durum Wheat Atta Flour, lot codes 6 286 548 and 6 287 548.

▪ Swad Durum Atta Flour Chappati Flour, lot codes 6 294 548; 6 299 548; 6 300 548; and 6 308 548.

▪ Golden Temple #1 Fine Durum Atta Flour Blend, lot codes 6 286 548 and 6 299 548, each with a Best By date of January 2018.

▪ Golden Temple Durum Atta Flour Blend, lot codes 6 287 548; 6 288 548; 6 294 548; 6 295 548; 6 300 548; and 6 301 548, all with a Best By date of January 2018. Also, lot codes 6 306 548; 6 307 548; and 6 308 548, each with a Best By date of February 2018.

According to the recall notice, the flour was distributed nationwide in 20-pound bags to 19 distributors and two small retailers.

Anyone who purchased flour from the affected lots are asked to put the flour in a sealed plastic bag and toss it out immediately. Then, call the company at 1-888-569-6728, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, for a product replacement coupon.
