Young artists call

Art Expressions Studio of Ellenton is looking for young artists from Manatee area schools, ages 10-16, to apply for one of the 13 episodes of a new educational TV series for children wanting to learn to paint. Applicants, with basic drawing and painting skills willing to learn new techniques in acrylic and/oil painting, should submit a photo, a description and explanation of one of their artworks. Women’s Career Uniforms wanted

State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s Fine Art Gallery is seeking uniforms worn by women throughout the decades. The exhibit, “Art of the Costume: Women in Uniform,” will honor women in the workspace by showcasing fashions that have influenced current trends. Deadline to submit photos is June 23 and notification of selections will be made June 30. Uniforms must be available for loan July 13-Oct. 28. Snooty’s annual birthday card contest

The South Florida Museum invites students in preschool through sixth grade to submit entries for Snooty’s annual birthday card contest. Cards will be judged for creativity and originality and are due by 5 p.m. July 8. Winners will be announced and awards will be made for first through third place winner in four age categories at Snooty’s Birthday Bash and Wildlife Festival July 23. Cuban National Ballet historian lecture

Dr. Miguel Cabrera, historian for the National Ballet of Cuba, will present a series of three lectures, “The History of Cuban Ballet: the School, Style and Technique.” Demonstrations of the Cuban technique will be performed by co-founder and artistic director, Ariel Serrano, and by dancers of the school’s pre-professional students. $20 per lecture, or $55 for all three. Audition call

Auditions are open to the public for Spirit Voices from Old Manatee, Season VI. Actors and actresses are desired to personify characters whose ages span from 9 years to 75-plus years. Some parts have monologues of 5-7 minutes, some are dialogues and some are nonspeaking roles. General expectations of actors are: good vocal projection, animation, personality, commitment to the production, ability to stand for long periods of time and perform in the outdoors at night, interest in local history is a plus. There is no compensation, this is a volunteer cast, talent is acknowledged in credits. Production dates and times are evenings Oct. 6-8, 13-16,20-23, and preview date is Oct. 5. Fashion Consulting Workshops

Goodwill Manasota and First Impression Image Consulting will provide free fashion consulting workshops at various locations. Attendees will receive an hour of fashion dos and dont’s and will help participants to find clothing that best suits them so they can dress for success. Local mystery and thriller authors will unite at Barnes and Noble and the Gulf Gate Public Library in celebration of the new “Gulf Coast Sisters in Crime” chapter, which promotes the professional development of women crime writers. Authors will offer readings 10 a.m.-noon June 18 and will be available to sign their books throughout the day at Barnes and Noble, 4010 S. Art Classes at the ‘Y’

Basic boating safety course for teenagers

The Anna Maria Island Sail and Power Squadron offers a special basic boating safety course for teenagers, “America’s Boating Course for Teens.” The course contains five sessions. At completion of the course and a successful written exam certifies the student to receive their state boating ID. Parents are welcome to attend. One adult is requested to attend the last Friday for scoring and to process state safe boating ID paperwork. Class size is limited and preregistration is required. The Manatee County Agriculture and Extension Service offers the following variety of educational classes:

Creative writing

A new creative writing class will be every third Tuesday of each month at H2U, 6670 Cortez Road W., Bradenton. Cost: $5.00 per class (with a $20 membership fee at H2U). The class is taught by Rev. Adult skating classes

Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex offers adult Learn-To-Skate classes 5:30-6:15 p.m. Wednesdays, 12:15-1 p.m. and 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Saturdays, and Tropical Spice on Ice Adults Synchronized Skating practices most Mondays 12:30-2 p.m. Mondays. Adults-only Freestyle sessions are 12:15-2 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Adult Learn-To Skate classes are $150 a person, once a week for eight weeks. AARP Driver safety classes

Driver Safety Classes for Manatee County are held monthly at various locations including the public libraries. This is a state-approved safety class and the certificate you receive is good for three years with your insurance company. The class is open to anyone age 50 and older. Dancing Through the Years Adult Ballet Classes

Dancing Through the Years resume their Adult ballet classes, all levels, including pointe, Mondays and Saturdays, at Bradenton Dance & Performing Arts Center, 2726 Sixth Ave. W., Bradenton, and Wednesday and Friday classes are held at 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria Island. Firearms Safety Training

Right On Target, a firearms safety training school offers a variety of classes and training options, including concealed carry firearms license courses, security courses, safety training, defense tactics, handcuffing techniques, officer safety, report writing, advanced training and State Security D and G license courses. Free boat building classes

Boatworks of Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage (FISH), will offer a free boat building class for beginners, including those who lack skills or confidence 9 a.m. Saturdays 4404 116th St. W., Cortez. If enough people are interested, the class will meet every Saturday. Participants will be able to participate or witness the building of a small plywood boat similar to an Optimist pram, under eight feet. The classes are free. 941-580-1036.

G.T. Bray Recreation Center

G.T.
