Meet Serena Williams' Coaches: Jarmere Jenkins and Rennae Stubbs
They say even the greatest athlete can't beat Father Time, but Serena Williams is hoping to prove you can at least compete, as the 44-year-old is in the midst of her comeback to tennis. The GOAT player opted not only to play in the Wimbledon singles tournament, but also in the doubles tournament with fellow legendary player and sibling, Venus. (Sadly, she was defeated in her singles wildcard match at Wimbledon against Maya Joint.)
That being said, longtime fans of Williams have been quick to note that her player's box these days doesn't quite look the same. This is largely due to the fact that her former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, isn't looking on as she competes. The two ended their player/coach relationship back in 2022, shortly before she played in her last Grand Slam, the 2022 US Open. So who's coaching Williams in her return to tennis?
Meet Jarmere Jenkins
Jarmere Jenkins is certainly a familiar face for tennis fans. The University of Virginia alum was a tennis pro himself, with his career-high singles ranking peaking at No. 190 in the world. However, he may be more recognizable to some as the longtime hitting partner of Williams. He's been her hitting partner since 2017, so he was #TeamSerena back when Mouratoglou was running the coaching ship.
Given Jenkins' years of experience working with Williams, it didn't come as a surprise to anyone that she reached out to him to help her stage a possible singles comeback.
Meet Rennae Stubbs
While Jenkins is helping to stage Williams' singles return, Rennae Stubbs has largely been on hand to help the Goat with her doubles play. Stubbs is uniquely qualified for this role, given that she was previously ranked the World No. 1 in 2000 for doubles and captured 60 doubles titles, including four doubles and two mixed doubles Grand Slam wins.
Stubbs also has coaching experience, even with Williams. When Williams parted ways with Mouratoglou in 2022, Stubbs stepped in to coach her for the 2022 US Open. Additionally, she's provided strategic insight and mentorship to former top players, Karolína Plíšková and Samantha Stosur.
