'One of the Toughest Losses of My Career': American Star Ben Shelton Stunned in First Round at Wimbledon
Last year, young American tennis star Ben Shelton made a deep run through Wimbledon, advancing all the way to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in a grueling four-hour match. Shelton was not able to match that run this year.
While Shelton entered the Grand Slam with high hopes of another deep run as the No. 4 seed in the tournament and the highest-rated American player in the world. Unfortunately, his run ended with a stunning loss in the first round.
Shelton Loses Five-Set Stunner
Shelton had a match point in a fifth-set tiebreaker, but he was not able to pull out a victory on Tuesday, falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (9) to Otto Virtanen, marking the first time he has ever lost in the first round at the tournament.
Shelton, who is the highest-ranked American in the sport at No. 5, had an 8-5 lead in the deciding 10-point tiebreaker against his 140th-ranked opponent. He then had match point with a 9-8 lead, but made an unforced error to keep Virtanen in the match. He then lost the next two points to complete the loss.
In the end, Shelton acknowledged his mistakes and credited his opponent.
"I thought I put myself in a great position to win at the end. He came up with the goods," Shelton said after the loss, via ESPN.
While Shelton was by far the higher rated player in the match, he said his opponent simply "wasn't really making mistakes."
"The way that he was playing, hitting the ball, it definitely forced my hand. He's playing aggressive," Shelton said. "He wasn't really making any mistakes. Towards the end, any ball I left semi-hanging, he was ripping a winner, especially in that last game before the tiebreak.
"In the tiebreak," he continued, "I was trying to get to the net as much as I could, try to really rush him and not allow him to swing away from the baseline."
'One of the Toughest Losses of My Career'
While Shelton offered plenty of praise to his opponent, that does not take the sting out of the loss for the young American star as he admitted it was one of the most disappointing matches of his career.
"I'm usually the type of person that gets back on the court or in the gym the next day. This is definitely one of the toughest losses of my career, coming here at Wimbledon. First time I've lost in the first round here," he said.
"I didn't even think I played a poor match today. Things just didn't go my way," he added. "I'll be right back on the practice courts in a couple days."
While Shelton has been eliminated, fellow American star Taylor Fritz – the No. 7 player in the world and the highest-ranked American remaining – won his opening-round match to advance to the second round.
