1974 Introduced One of Rock's Most Influential Debut Albums and Critics Still Praise It Today

Some of the biggest bands in rock history announce themselves with a classic debut. According to Rolling Stone, KISS did exactly that.

In its ranking of the band's studio albums, Rolling Stone placed self-titled Kiss (1974) at the top, praising the record that introduced Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss to the world and laid the foundation for one of rock's most recognizable acts.

Why This Debut Still Stands Above the Rest

Released on Feb. 18, 1974, Kiss arrived before the band's fire-breathing stage show and larger-than-life image became household staples. Instead, the album showcased a hungry young group blending hard rock, glam, and catchy hooks into a sound that would soon define the band.

The record featured future concert staples including "Strutter," "Firehouse," and "100,000 Years." While it wasn't an immediate commercial success, many of those songs became fan favorites through the band's relentless touring schedule.

The Songs That Launched a Rock Empire

Although Kiss didn't produce a major hit single at the time, its tracks became the backbone of the band's live shows. Songs like "Deuce" and "Black Diamond" remained concert staples for decades, while "Cold Gin," written by Ace Frehley, became one of the group's signature songs despite never being released as a single.

Why Critics Still Rank It No. 1

Rolling Stone praised the debut for capturing the band's raw energy before fame transformed it into one of rock's biggest attractions. The magazine argued that the album remains the purest expression of what made KISS special from the very beginning: memorable riffs, larger-than-life attitude, and songs built for the stage.

More than 50 years later, Kiss is still considered one of rock's greatest debut albums. It wasn't a commercial hit out of the gate, but decades of fans and critics have turned it into the record that launched one of music's biggest bands.
