This Contractor's Free Trick Could Save You During This Weekend's Brutal Heat Wave
Much of the U.S. is under a heat advisory as we head into the Fourth of July weekend. And while many people expect (and even enjoy) the warmer temperatures that come along with summer holidays like this, CBS News reports that a dangerous heatwave is expected to settle over much of the country, pushing many areas into the triple digits.
When the weather gets that hot, it's important to stay cool, especially at home. If you're like me and live in one of the areas expected to see record temperatures, that may mean finding new and unusual ways to keep your home cool as the mercury rises. Now, a contractor is going viral on TikTok for his tips on beating the heat at home, especially because his suggestions won't cost you a dime as you prepare for the record temps.

This Contractor's Free Cooling Trick Is Going Viral
Fans and window AC units are going to be a hot commodity as the holiday weekend approaches, which is why @bam_renovate is offering his followers tips on keeping the house cool without a trip to the store.
The contractor starts off by advising his followers to get up early and open their windows and doors. While he says the move may sound counterintuitive due to the heat, he explains that the dropping outdoor temperatures will help circulate indoor air, allowing the cooler air to move freely through your home. Of course, you will only be able to benefit from this trick if nighttime temperatures truly drop after the sun goes down.
Next, he says you want to shut all your curtains and blinds as the sun comes up. If you're able, he says that you can take an extra step and cover the exterior of your windows and doors with a sheet or shade to help block the sun and insulate.
People Shared Some of Their Own Tips in the Comments
Bam's followers were eager to share what had worked for them during previous heat waves in the comments, with several noting the benefits of exterior shutters. "We are looking at getting shutters on our south-facing windows," one person wrote. "Always been impressed by how well they work in other European countries."
Another person said that they had covered the outside of their windows with a reflective foil to try to block some of the sun, which prompted a word of warning from another follower who wrote, "Worth noting that it's a bad idea to put foil on the inside of double-glazed windows because can cause them to crack."
The Red Cross Has a Few More Tips to Stay Safe
This heatwave will be dangerous for many, which is why the American Red Cross is advising people to take additional precautions, which include:
- Staying hydrated
- Running errands before the heatwave hits
- Spending a few hours a day in an air-conditioned building or facility
- Wearing loose-fitting clothes
- Checking in on elderly or at-risk neighbors
Heatwaves can come and go, so this information is important to keep in mind all summer long, especially as we head into the warmer months when these temperatures are more common.
