Any Yellowstone fan knows the cast goes through what they call “Cowboy Camp” to help them prepare for their roles. The camp includes horseback riding training and ranch training, both of which help them look and feel like real cowboys on screen. And according to actor Marc Menchaca, Dutton Ranch was no different. While talking to Woman’s World about the show, he revealed the ins and outs of Cowboy Camp and even shared what show he would crossover with if given the chance. Read on for more.

Marc Menchaca talks about Cowboy Camp

Menchaca is a 50-year-old actor best known for his roles in Homeland (2011 to 2012), She’s Lost Control (2014) and Ozark (2017 to 2022). He’s also made headlines for his marriage to Game of Thrones and The Abandons star Lena Headey. In Dutton Ranch, he plays Zachariah, a newly released jailbird looking to become a cowboy.

“I was very nervous,” Menchaca tells Woman’s World of joining the cast. “It’s a big job to enter this world, even though it is a new story that doesn’t really follow Yellowstone.”

One thing that helped ease Menchaca’s nerves? Going to Cowboy Camp with some of his new castmates.

“When we first got there, they kind of vetted us and also just made people get better,” the actor said of the experience. “You don’t want to be looking like you just stepped on a horse for the first time when you’re on camera. So they were wonderful, the cowboys. I could hang out with them all day.”

During this interview, Menchaca was paired up with his co-star Juan Pablo Raba, who said he had heard stories about Menchaca’s time at Cowboy Camp. When asked what those stories were, both Paba and Menchaca refused to answer, leaving us to wonder what really happened during that training period.

Marc Menchaca teases a ‘Dutton Ranch’ crossover

One of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind is, “Will Dutton Ranch cross over with any other Taylor Sheridan show?” And while Menchaca doesn’t know for sure—in fact his exact answer was “That’s a Taylor question”—he does have one he thinks his character would fit into well.

“I think Zach would fit in well on Landman [the Texas-based oil drama]” he said. “Marshals [the other Yellowstone spinoff, which follows the U.S. Marshals in Montana], I don’t know. Zach doesn’t want to go back to jail, so I don’t know [about Marshals]. I just don’t want to spend a season in the prison cell. That’s all.”

Menchaca also revealed that out of all the Sheridan shows, Landman is his favorite, which would make a crossover that much sweeter.

“I just like the pace of it and the world of it,” he explains. “It takes place basically where I’m from [San Antonio, Texas], and so I get the characters and it makes me feel at home, just with a little heightened violence.”

Be sure to catch Marc Menchaca as Zachariah in Dutton Ranch, which premiered today on Paramount and Paramount+.
