98 Years Ago Today, Mickey Mouse Debuted

At the time, May 15, 1928, may have seemed like any other day, but in reality it would become one of the most important in the history of pop culture and global consumerism. Today,

98 years ago, the on-screen debut of arguably the world's most recognizable icon: Mickey Mouse took place, which would soon become the cornerstone of one of the most influential companies ever created.

Mickey Mouse currently sits No. 1 on Fandom.com's ranking of "The 100 Most Iconic Fictional Characters," ahead of fictional figures like Superman, Batman, Mario and Bugs Bunny.

The face of the Walt Disney brand made his first unofficial appearance in the short film Plane Crazy, shown on May 15, 1928. In addition to Mickey Mouse, Minnie co-starred in the film, beginning the two characters' near 100-year legacies as pillars of American animation.

Plane Crazy, a silent short film produced by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, featured Mickey in his first iteration attempting to pilot a homemade plane with Minnie aboard as well. The short was shown as a small test screening in May but failed to secure distribution.

In the midst of Hollywood's transition from silent films to "talkies" (films with synchronized sound), Disney would introduce his first film with sound in November, Steamboat Willie. Widely distributed, technically, Disney's second Mickey film would mark the character's first official appearance to general audiences.

Following the success of Steamboat Willie, Disney added synchronized sound to Plane Crazy and re-released it in 1929.

Over the next century, Mickey Mouse would become one of the most recognizable symbols of pop culture and the icon of one of America's most powerful brands. Including film/television, theme parks, merchandise, The Walt Disney Company is worth an estimated $183 billion, putting it in the top 100 most valuable companies globally.

The Disney brand's impact around the world is massively due to an imaginative man and his mouse who debuted on this day in 1928.
