'Dutton Ranch' Spoilers: What Happened to Beth and Rip's Ranch?

The premise of Dutton Ranchis right there in the title: it's a story about a new ranch for the Dutton family, this time, managed by Rip (Cole Hauser) and Beth (Kelly Reilly), following the events of Yellowstone. But wait, didn't Beth and Rip already have a new ranch? What happened to that one? Why did they leave Montana?

In the first episode of Dutton Ranch, the motivation for why Beth and Rip pull up roots and head to Texas becomes clear right away. The majority of this show might take place in Texas, but the opening prologue finds Beth and Rip in Montana. And that's when something happens that sends them on their way forever. Spoilers ahead.

Did Beth and Rip Lose the Yellowstone Ranch?

The beginning of Dutton Ranch finds Beth and Rip in Dillon, Montana. Following the finale of Yellowstone, the pair started a new ranch here, as the original Yellowstone ranch is no longer owned by their family. Instead, as depicted inMarshals, Chief Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation are in control.

So, in Episode 1 of Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip are not near the Yellowstone ranch. This is their smaller, Dillon ranch, and while they're sleeping out under the stars, this ranch burns because of an unexpected wildfire.

You didn't miss anything. This didn't happen in Yellowstone, and Dutton Ranch is not presenting a flashback. This is how Dutton Ranch starts: with Beth and Rip being forced to move because of extremely bad luck.

The South Texas Town in Dutton Ranch is Fictional

Although Dutton Ranch was filmed in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the show takes place in the border town of Rio Paloma. Here's the thing: Rio Paloma is not a real town in that part of Texas, and, of course, Dallas-Fort Worth isn't southern Texas at all. As producer David Glasser has admitted, everyone knew that moving Beth and Rip to Texas was a big swing. But it was a move that "just made sense," according to an interview with Glassesr in the Dallas-based D Magazine.

"If we were going to do the fish out of water somewhere, there was no better place than Texas," Glasser explained. "Especially because Rip and Beth are used to the mountains and streams of Montana, and Texas is cowboy country in a different way."
