Humane Society of the United States Anniversary

In 1954, the Humane Society of the United States was founded by a small handful of visionaries. Sixty three years later, the Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest and most effective animal protection organization providing hands-on care and services to more than 100,000 animals each year.

“Rescue Me!,” by Richard Jonas with photography by Richard Phibbs, features 64 portraits of rescue dogs in the hope of finding them forever homes. Each dog is revealed as a unique individual with its personal journey described, often from abandonment or surrender, through healing and rehabilitation to a new life with its own story of hope for a forever home. “Rescuing Penny Jane” by Amy Sutherland is an unforgettable and inspiring trip through the world of homeless dogs and the people who work so hard to save them. Filled with rich, moving and laugh-out-loud funny stories, this is a compelling picture of the challenges and triumphs of rescue dogs and their champions.

“Foster Saving the World One Pooch at a Time” is by local Bradenton author Maureen Ann Flaherty who has fostered more than 200 dogs. Using humor, she shares her wealth of experience, offering helpful instruction for choosing a rescue organization to work with and imparts wise guidance for the foster “parent.”

Industry experts also contribute essential information, and human guardians tell adoptions stories that will warm your heart. Filled with gorgeous photos of dogs and the people who love them, “Foster” is an essential read for animal lovers. You might even be moved to help.

“Earnest” by Kristen Von Kreisler is about the sweet and eager-to-please Labrador retriever that Anna and her boyfriend, Jeff, fall in love with the minute they see him at Seattle’s Second Chance Shelter. In no time they are a pack of three. After a crisis, it is Earnest who helps them recover; he is a dog who desires only one thing, to keep his family intact. Be prepared to fall in love with Earnest.

“Finding Gobie” is a miraculous tale by marathon runner Dion Leonard who meets a stray dog while competing in a 155 mile race in the Gobi Desert. While experiencing the challenges of the desert Dion and Gobi became best friends. When Gobi goes missing in the Chinese city, with help from strangers and assistance on the internet he tracks her down and they reunite forever, proving miracles are possible.
