Community sports | Led by Derick Beltran's triple-double, Bradenton Gym Ratz open inaugural season with sweep

HOLMES BEACH -- Derick Beltran posted a triple-double Sunday in the Bradenton Gym Ratz's second game to complete the Gym Ratz's 2-0 opening weekend with a 100-94 win against the Music City Kings in Holmes Beach.

Bradenton, which is playing its inaugural season in the National Alliance of Basketball Leagues, opened the weekend with a 15-point win against the Kings in their first-ever game.

Beltran's torrid start of the season carried the Gym Ratz throughout.

The Riverview native, who attended Spoto High School and then played for two years at Southern University while leading the Jaguars to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, led Bradenton in scoring in both games and also cracked double-digit rebounds twice.

On Sunday, he also dished out 11 assists for the triple-double.

Beltran scored a season-high 25 points in the two-game series finale against Music City and also grabbed 11 rebounds one day after going for 15 and 12. He did, however, turn the ball over nine times in the victory and went just 7 for 22 from the field.

The Gym Ratz will have the weekend off before Beltran gets a shot at replicating his strong start to the season May 28 and 29 against the Atlanta Show at The Center of Anna Maria Island.
