IMG Academy's Emiliano Grillo made the cut last week at the Masters held annually at Augusta National Golf Club.
However, Grillo will still need to continue his form to earn a return invitation. Grillo finished tied for 17th with a 4-over par 292. The top 12, including ties, from the previous year's Masters qualify for the first major of the following year. Grillo's two middle rounds, where he carded a 75 and 74, were the culprit in him sitting three shots outside a top-12 finish when Sunday's final round concluded.
Bradenton's Doris Chen, who trained at IMG Academy before winning a national title at USC, made her LPGA Symetra Tour debut last week at the Florida's Natural Charity Classic in Lake Wales. Chen tied for 48th place after a 71-73-79--223 left her well behind Samantha Richdale's winning mark of 7-under-par 209. The Symetra Tour returns to Manatee County next week with the annual Guardian Retirement Championship at Sara Bay Country Club. The tournament is held Friday-Sunday.
The Concession Cup returns to The Concession Golf Club in East Manatee next week. The tournament, which pits the United States against Great Britain & Ireland in a match play format with teams of mid-amateurs, senior amateurs and super senior amateurs, starts on April 21. Play continues Friday and concludes on Saturday next week.
Clearwater's Ryan Gildersleeve won the West Florida Golf Tour's return to Manatee County on Monday. The one-day tournament at Bradenton Country Club saw Gildersleeve fire a 5-under-par 66 to win by four shots. He collected more than $1,000 for first place.
