SCF softball stages power play
The State College of Florida hit four home runs to power a doubleheader sweep of St. John's River in a junior college softball doubleheader Saturday in Bradenton.
Kassidy Neptune started the power display with a two-run homer in SCF's 8-6 victory in Game 1. Savannah Money and Brandi Bunker collected two hits each in support of pitcher Kayla Maxwell (7-3).
In the second game, Neptune hit another two-run homer while going 3 for 3 in a 12-0 win. Erica Ward and Jaimie Harney each hit a three-run homer and Darby Bernaldo finished 3 for 3.
Jessica Reid (9-3), who posted her third shutout of the season for SCF (16-7), which begins conference play Tuesday against Florida Southwest.
JUCO Baseball
SCF 4-8, Chipola 1-1 -- Richie Rivera hit a three-run homer in the second game and went 2 for 3 with a triple in the opener to lead host State College of Florida to the doubleheader sweep of Chipola College.
The Manatees won the opener 4-1 behind the starting pitching of Gabe Moore, who scattered three hits across five innings. Ryan Ahern earned the save. Rivera scored two of SCF's runs and accounted for two of its five hits.
In the second game, Rivera's homer powered an 8-1 win that made a winner out of pitcher Tyler Bench. Garrett Hall also homered, and Jose Lopez finished 2 for 3 with a two-run double. Jared Pruett scored three runs for SCF (15-6), which completes the weekend series Sunday at 1 p.m.
Boys lacrosse
Cardinal Mooney 12, ODA 8 -- Leland Wheeler produced three goals, and Ethan Bertrand had two to lead host Out-of-Door Academy in Friday's loss. Ian Martin, Dakota Dickerson and Kevin Deems completed the scoring for the Thunder.
Amateur boxing
Largo -- Thirteen-year-old Andrew Cano of Sarasota won a unanimous three-round decision against Julius Smith of Clearwater in a USA Boxing fight card. Cano won his second fight, despite giving up two years to his foe. Cano, who represents the Sarasota Boxing Club, is 2-0.
